2014 Workshops featuring Lura Schwarz Smith and Patti Hempen

In 2014 we will be bringing you 3 workshops in conjunction with Stitches in Bloom. Our featured artist Lura Schwarz Smith, as well as Patti Hempen will teach in the days before the show and Heidi Leugers will teach a wool felting workshop following the show(details TBA).

Transforming the Traditional
Our 2014 Featured artist will be Lura Schwarz Smith.
On January 21, 22, and 23rd she will be teaching a workshop called Transforming the Traditional:

"Give an old favorite a new twist – take a traditional block and tweak it.  Learn to easily draft and piece customized distorted traditional blocks. The sample Barn Quilt is totally machine pieced, including the machine-inset sphere. Learn to distort traditional quilt blocks using both curved and straight distortions, and why and how to use this in your work for added dimension, perspective, and depth. This technique is very applicable to individual variations in each student's style, and those who wish to can work abstractly, quickly and freely creating beautiful pieced textures and forms.

Using my "P-Free" piecing technique (no Pins, no Paper, and no Pain!) really free yourself up by learning to produce pieced roses with no pattern. Diagrams are provided for guidance -- each rose will be different. No appliqué - all rotary cutting and machine curved piecing. This is free-wheeling rotary cutting and piecing fun for those ready to try working curves more freely and without patterns."

Rainbow Garden

On January 21, 22, and 23rd Patti Hempen will be teaching a workshop called Rainbow Garden

Patti’s  website is “End of the Rainbow Quilts” and her quilts could definitely be found at the end of any rainbow!  Sge will teach you to design, cut out, stitch, fuse, and machine appliqué this beautiful “Prize-Winning” kaleidoscopic flower garden. Every “bloom” will be a wonderfully random explosion of colour and surprise! There will be no two flowers alike!  You will also see other samples of  Patti’s quilts and discuss the possibilities of using this technique for other sized quilts if desired. In the event that you are ready to finish your quilt, Patti will teach you the layering and basting processes for quilting and help you with quilting design choices.
